Three members of law enforcement perished and no fewer than 15 people were hurt in an apparently premeditated blast caused by gas at a country home in the northern part of Italy.

Event Timeline

The explosion was triggered as officers and emergency crews went into the residence near the city of Verona to enforce an court-ordered eviction for three siblings in their late 50s and mid-60s.

The three victims who died served in the Carabinieri force.

Arrests and Aftermath

A man and a woman were taken into custody at the scene and a third person who fled after the explosion was apprehended soon after. All three have been taken to hospital.

The detonation could be noticed as far as 3 miles distant and images from the location revealed the property left as a heap of debris.

“This is a time for grieving,” said Interior Minister the Interior Minister, who noted that attempts had been made to evict the three family members in the earlier times.

Financial Context

The head of the Veneto area, the regional head, stated the residence was facing an eviction order due to debts accrued by the property owners.

Negotiators had been assigned to speak to the siblings who had barricaded themselves into the property. When the officers reached the location just after 03:00 (01:00 GMT), investigators suspect a family member set off the detonation.

“Upon entering the house, we were confronted with an act of absolute madness,” provincial police commander Claudio Papagno told reporters.

A propane tank had been activated, and the blast immediately struck our members,” he added.

Molotov cocktails were also located at the property, the minister said.

Injuries and Destruction

Injured individuals by the incident consisted of an additional 11 personnel of the police force as well as three members of national police and a fire services member.

According to the Verona prosecutor, the building was in a poor condition and had no electricity.

The prosecutor believed the detonation had happened on a level above the entrance and told reporters it was a “deliberate and pre-planned murder”. Shortly before the explosion, he mentioned officers had “noticed a hissing sound, likely the propane tanks being activated”.

Community Reaction

“Everyone was aware the circumstances were severe,” neighbors told Italian media, noting that the trio had earlier warned to “blow themselves up” rather than leave the house.

“The explosion had left a ‘terrible, very painful and dramatic toll’.”

The Defense Minister the Defence Minister stood alongside other elected representatives in paying tribute to the three men who had lost their lives in the line of duty.
