Unmanned Assault on United Nations Facility in Conflict-Ravaged Sudan Claims Six UN Personnel

A unmanned attack targeted a United Nations facility in war-torn Sudan on Saturday, leading to the deaths of six peacekeepers, according to a statement.

The incident occurred at a peacekeeping logistics base in the city of Kadugli, located in the mid-country region of Kordofan.

Eight additional soldiers were injured in the attack. Each of the those affected are from Bangladesh, serving in the United Nations mission in Abyei.

“Assaults targeting UN peacekeepers could amount to violations of international law under global statutes,” officials stated, urging those responsible for the “inexcusable” attack to be prosecuted.

Military Points Finger at Fighter Group

The government forces attributed the strike on the Rapid Support Forces (RSF), a prominent armed faction that has been engaged in conflict with the government troops for control of the country for over 24 months.

The attack “shows the destructive nature of the rebel militia and its supporters,” the army said in a statement.

Background of the Disputed Region

The oil-rich Abyei is a claimed region between Sudan and its southern neighbor, and the United Nations contingent has been stationed there since 2011, when South Sudan gained its independence from Sudan.

Demands for an urgent halt to fighting in Sudan were also issued to allow “a comprehensive, inclusive and Sudanese-owned dialogue” to resolve the fighting.

Country Plunged into Conflict Since 2023

Sudan was engulfed in widespread violence in April 2023 when a power struggle between the military and the RSF escalated into direct clashes in the capital, Khartoum and across the country.

  • The war has claimed over 40,000 lives, a toll advocates consider a major underestimate.
  • Recent fighting has been concentrated in Kordofan, especially since paramilitary forces took control of El Fasher.
  • The conflict has wrecked towns and has been noted for grave abuses, like widespread sexual violence and ethnic slaughter.
  • These acts have been called crimes against humanity by international bodies.
  • The situation has also created the world’s worst humanitarian emergency and pushed parts of the country into extreme hunger.
